Learn More About SolarWise Own Your Output

For each solar panel you purchase ($850/per panel), you'll receive a credit on your electric bill based on the panels monthly electric generation. You are entitled to the energy produced by each panel purchased until the year 2034.

As energy prices increase, the value of the kWh produced by your panel will increase.

Why is Connexus Energy offering a community solar garden?

Our members have shown a strong interest in alternative energy sources. Solar gardens not only make solar energy more affordable for everyone, they are well suited for those who don’t want to take on the responsibility of ownership.

Who is paying for this project?

Connexus has engaged a private investor to finance the project and take advantage of federal tax benefits. The cost of the solar garden does not impact our current rates or members who don’t participate in the SolarWise project.
The cost of the project, as well as maintenance and insurance until the year 2034, is covered in the price of each panel.

Is this project subsidized by members of Connexus Energy who are not interested in the solar garden?

No. This project is not subsidized by the entire membership. The costs associated with the solar garden are paid for by those who enroll. In fact, our solar garden eliminates the cost-shifting for non-solar members, which typically is not the case for residential rooftop solar applications.

How much does it cost?

With the Own your Output Program (Option 1) , panels cost $850 each. The average kilowatt (kWh) output from the total number of panels purchased cannot exceed the service address’s average annual electric usage.

Is financing available?

No. Payment for the panel(s) is due at the time the purchase agreement is signed. We accept cash, check, or money order.

How much electricity does each panel generate?

Each panel is capable of producing up to 310 watts (and is estimated to produce 425 kWh starting the first year). Based on typical weather in Ramsey, MN output will range from 21-45 kWh per month and will vary from year-to-year.

Do I need to own a home to participate?

No. One of the unique benefits of a solar garden is that the panels are located at Connexus Energy and not on your property. No matter where you live in our service area, either in a home that you own or a rental unit, you can participate in the SolarWise program.

What happens if I move?

If you move to a new residence within our service area, your participation and production credits will transfer with you. If you are moving out of our service territory, you may:
  • Transfer your ownership to another member on our lines, including a non-profit organization.
  • Transfer your ownership to the member moving into your existing home.
  • Sell your ownership to another residential member on our lines. Connexus Energy does not participate in the sale.
  • Sell your ownership back to Connexus Energy. Purchase price is determined according to the purchase agreement.

Download and complete the SolarWise Production Credits Transfer form and return to Connexus Energy. Notification of changes must be made at least 30 days prior to the proposed effective date.

How is the credit to my monthly bill determined?

Your solar panel(s) is part of the solar garden array. You will receive a monthly credit on your bill based on the output of the system.

How do I know how much energy my portion of the solar garden is producing each month?

Once the solar garden is commissioned (turned on), a web portal will be available to all subscribers to illustrate the system output.

How much will I save on my bill?

By enrolling in the SolarWise program, you are entitled to the energy produced by each solar panel you purchase until the year 2034. As energy prices increase, the value of the kWh produced by your panel will increase.
We estimate that if energy prices increase 3% per year, your simple payback is 16 years. If prices increase 5% per year, the payback is 14 years.

What happens when the contract ends in 2034?

Until then, Connexus will continue to evaluate advances in solar technologies to help us determine the next step(s). New panels may be installed or existing panel upgrades may be available.

How will the credit on my bill look?

A detailed line on the back of your bill will display the number of kWhs credited each month, multiplied by the current electric rate (including the monthly power cost adjustment). This number will change each month.

Who is eligible to participate in the SolarWise program?

All members of Connexus Energy are able to participate in the program.

Can you bill me for the panels on my monthly Connexus Energy bill?

Payment for the panel(s) is due at the time the purchase agreement is signed. We accept cash, check, or money order.

Do I “own” the panels?

Connexus Energy owns the physical panel, located in the Ramsey, MN solar garden. You own the energy that is produced by the panel.

Am I eligible for the 30% federal investment tax credit?

The federal tax credit is already incorporated into the pricing structure. Without the tax credit, the price would be significantly higher.

What happens if a panel breaks or needs maintenance?

All maintenance, repair, and insurance costs are included in the purchase price. If something breaks, Connexus will fix it.

If I don't buy now, will there be future solar gardens once this one is sold out?

Possibly, but the price, size, and energy credit may not be the same.
